How did I come to write Chronicles of a (virgin) bride-to-be?
It’s a great question. Chronicles is not the book I was planning to write. I had an idea in mind for an entirely different story. Just before I began writing however, an unquestionably wise friend of mine brought up the subject of saving sex for marriage. He mentioned in passing that there is very little material available to encourage young people in this sense. That’s how the idea was birthed. So despite all my misgivings and British stiff upper lip, I somehow found myself writing a book about sex. Well kind of (!)
Is the book is part of a series?
Absolutely! Apologies in advance to all those who think they are going to fully explore Andy and Lizzie’s story in this first instalment. The good news is that you’ll get to follow more hilarious mishaps and adventures in Book 2.
Is the book autobiographical?
No. Although for the record, the author states that she can fully relate to the main premise of the storyline 😉
I had so much fun inventing the characters in this book. Isn’t that part of the beauty of fiction? Creating different characters and working out their appearance, personality and so forth. I enjoy basing certain elements of their temperament on traits or habits I’ve observed in others and then exploring these to see how a character reacts. I had a lot of fun developing the personalities of Marilyn and Bernie in this respect. Janice is another good example. I think she was one of my favourite characters to write and will continue to play a key role in Book 2.
At this juncture I should make very clear that Andy and Lizzie are not intended to represent a certain ‘better’ way of being Christian or ‘doing Christianity’. I think we can all agree anyway that there is not one single, perfect way to do that. The idea of the story was always to provide a snapshot of encouragement… to take an increasingly shunned biblical precept and see how it could be depicted within the realms of a relationship in modern society.
Full disclosure though, a few of the ‘school’ stories are loosely based on real-life mischief from the author’s childhood. I’ll let you ponder which ones got her into trouble…
